Filly Carlsbad Suffers Fatal Breakdown

Six-time stakes winner Carlsbad, the expected favorite for the La Brea Stakes (gr. I) next week, suffered a fatal breakdown while completing a seven-furlong workout at Santa Anita Dec. 19.

According to Daily Racing Form, the 3-year-old Arizona-bred filly fractured her right ankle on the clubhouse turn while galloping out following a 1:26 4/5 drill. Carlsbad was euthanized on the track by veterinarin Melinda Blue, it was reported.

Trainer Jeff Mullins was preparing the speedy daughter of Rocky Bar--Kits Peak, by Pine Bluff, to compete in the seven-furlong La Brea on opening day of Santa Anita's 2009-10 season on Dec. 26. Owned by her breeder, Dennis Weir, Carlsbad won seven of 10 career races and earned $437,126. She won the Hollywood Oaks (gr. II) in June and set a track record at Del Mar this summer in capturing the 6 1/2-furlong Rancho Bernardo (gr. III) in 1:14.93.

In her most recent race, Carlsbad ran second to Informed Decision in the Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes (gr. II) at Keeenland Oct. 10.
