Trainer Michael Gorham earned his 1,000th victory on the evening of Nov. 27 when Marquis Jet won the second race at Meadowlands.
Jockey Gabriel Saez guided the 4-year-old Golden Missile gelding to a 4 1/2-length victory as the even-money favorite in the $5,000 claiming event at 5 1/2 furlongs. Allen Wolf is the winning owner.
Gorham, 45, who splits time between the northeast and Florida, is a native of Canton, Mass. A former assistant to leading New England conditioner Bruce Smith, Gorham has been training since 1985. His first win came that year with Unerring at Suffolk Downs.
Gorham's best horse to date is the million-dollar earner Mandy's Gold, winner of the 2002 Ruffian Handicap (gr. I) who won or placed in 21 of 24 lifetime starts. He trained Mandy's Gold for his brother John Gorham's Steeplechase Farm. Other top horses he trained were grade III winner Trickle of Gold and and Adore the Gold, who captured the 2007 Swale Stakes (gr. II) at Gulfstream Park.
