Maktoums have Multiple Stakes-Winning Weekend

Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and his brother Maktoum Al Maktoum accounted for three stakes victories at three separate European tracks on Aug. 11.

The richest of the three, by far, was won by Slew the Red for Sheikh Maktoum. The 4-year-old son of Red Ransom won the La Coupe Stakes (Fr-III) at Longchamp in his last out, and on Saturday added the group III Prix Gontaut-Biron at Deauville. He defeated Ecurie Chalhoub's Mocham Glen by a length. Following that rival were two Maktoum hombreds, Sobieski, racing for Godolphin, and Earlene, racing in Sheikh Mohammed's name and finished third and fourth. The winner earned FF220,000.

Slew the Red was bred by Shirley Taylor, who breeds in the name W Lazy T. She is also the breeder of grade I winner Scorpion. Maktoum purchased Slew the Red in his Gainsborough name for $185,000 at the 1998 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Nayef, racing in the Petros Rose of Lancaster Stakes (Eng-III) at Haydock and Muklah, winner of the Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket, both won their respective races by five lengths. Sheikh Hamdan campaigns both runners and both are homebreds.

Two-year-old Muklah was making only her third start in the seven-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies. The daughter of Singspiel and the Green Desert mare Maraatib covered seven furlongs in 1:27.80. she is trained by Barry Hills.

M. Tregoning trains Nayef, a Kentucky-bred son of Gulch who last year won the Tom McGee Autumn Stakes. With Saturday's stakes, Nayef has won half of his six races.
