Zippy Chippy, the losingest Thoroughbred in North America, posted his second unofficial victory Wednesday night by beating a two-legged challenger.
The 10-year-old gelding beat a minor league baseball player in a handicap match race billed as ``Man vs. Beast II'' prior to the International League game between the Rochester Red Wings and Ottawa Lynx.
Zippy Chippy beat Red Wings outfielder Darnell McDonald by a length in a 50-yard race on the outfield grass of Frontier Field.
Last Aug. 18, Rochester outfielder Jose Herrera outran Zippy Chippy in a 40-yard race.
On Wednesday night, McDonald, who appeared to break across the starting line early, held a slight lead at 40 yards, but Zippy rallied over the final 10 yards.
``I might have got him at 40 yards, but that extra 10 yards put him over the hump,'' said McDonald, who added that he never had lost a race to a human.
``Zippy was ready today,'' jockey Jorge Hiraldo said. ``Last year he was a little scared.''
The victory boosted Zippy Chippy's record against humans to 1-1. He holds the Thoroughbred record of 89 consecutive losses against Thoroughbreds.
In March, Zippy defeated a 10-year-old Standardbred pacer named Paddy's Laddy in an exhibition at Freehold Raceway.Related Story (With Photo) Rochester Democrat and Chronicle
