Mountaineer Picks Up Tab for Jockey Exams

Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort said it will pay for physical examinations for jockeys.

West Virginia rules of racing require that prior to the beginning of each calendar year, jockeys must have a physical in order to be eligible to ride. The physicals will be conducted at the office of Dr. Kamlesh Aggarwal in East Liverpool, Ohio.

Mountaineer officials said paying for jockey physicals "represents a funding commitment" from the track.

“It’s important to Mountaineer that each jockey who rides at Mountaineer has undergone a complete physical as other athletes do,” Mountaineer director of racing Rose Mary Williams said in a statement. “By funding the physicals, which are conducted at the jockeys’ convenience, we support and facilitate the health and well-being of our jockey colony.”

Mountaineer's 2009 season ends Dec. 29. The track's live racing schedule for 2010 has yet to be approved by the West Virginia Racing Commission.
