Street Cry’s status as a top stallion took on new meaning when his son Shocking captured one of the world's greatest races, the Emirates Melbourne Cup (Aust-I) Nov. 3. Street Cry, a Horse of the Year in Dubai and a U.S. grade I winner, now has sired 11 grade I or group I winners .
Street Cry (Machiavellian--Helen Street, by Troy) is the first North American-based stallion to sire a Melbourne Cup winner since Theatrical sired 2002 winner Media Puzzle. Street Cry stands at Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley near Lexington, and Theatrical, who recently was pensioned from stallion duty, stood at John Sikura’s Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms, also near Lexington. Shocking was conceived when Street Cry shuttled to Darley Australia for the 2004 Southern Hemisphere season.
Two other sires of Melbourne Cup winners this decade have fashionable ties to North America. Rhythm, sire of 2001 New Zealand-bred winner Ethereal, was named North America’s champion 2-year-old male of 1989 after winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I). Sir Tristram, bred in Great Britain and sire of 2000 New Zealand-bred winner Brew, competed in the 100th running of the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), won by Cannonade, but finished unplaced. Both Rhythm and Sir Tristram stood outside North America when their Melbourne Cup winners were conceived.
Street Cry, who entered stud in 2003, has sired a total of 32 stakes winners, including 21 graded or group winners. Street Cry’s fee of $150,000 for 2010 is unchanged from 2009.
