Trainer Ferris Allen, a native of Virginia, is right at home at Colonial Downs. For the fifth consecutive season, Allen has won -- or at least tied for -- the leading trainer title at the Virginia racetrack.
Through Monday, Allen had 10 winners, one more than Vincent Blengs. But Blengs has no horses entered Tuesday, closing day of the meet. Allen, meanwhile, has six entered Tuesday, so he could add to his total.
In 1997, Allen finished 11 wins ahead of King Leatherbury. In 1998, Allen tied with Hamilton Smith with nine winners. In 1999, he had 15 winners to Smith's 11. Last year, Allen won 17 races, six more than Robbie Bailes.
Mario Pino has long since clinched his third straight riding title at Colonial Downs. Pino had won with 49 of 175 mounts through Monday.
