Monmouth Park's $500,000 gamble paid dividends Sunday when a record crowd of 47,127 turned out to watch Point Given in the $1.5-million Haskell Invitational (gr. I) at the New Jersey track. The track offered to boost the purse for the 1 1/8-mile race by $500,000 if a Triple Crown race winner entered.

The previous attendance record of 43,591 was set on Aug. 4, 1962.

Monmouth Park offered a 12-race program Sunday with seven stakes races, four of them graded.

Saratoga Racecourse, where the numbers were inflated by a t-shirt giveaway, also reported record attendance of 66,942, surpassing the previous record of 66,194 set on Aug. 15, 1999.
