Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 972 horses for its Kentucky fall yearling sale, which will be held Oct. 26-28 in Lexington. The total is down 10.8% from last year’s total of 1,090.
Graduates of the auction include back-to-back Kentucky Derby Presented By Yum! Brands (gr. I) winners Big Brown and Mine That Bird. Big Brown, who took the Run for the Roses in 2008 and was that year’s champion 3-year-old male, was sold by Monticule, agent, for $60,000 to Eddie Woods, agent, during the 2006 edition of the fall yearling sale. Mine That Bird, this year’s Derby winner, is a graduate of the 2007 fall auction, bringing $9,500 from Dominion Bloodstock Agency. Highclere Sales, agent, consigned Mine That Bird, who was a 2008 champion in Canada.
During last year’s fall sale, 533 yearlings were sold for a gross of $7,471,900. The average price was $13,512, and the median price was $5,500. Compared to 2007, the gross was down 29.5%. The average declined 27.8% while the median fell 45%.
The buy-back rate rose from 20.3% in 2007 to 35.6% in 2008.
