The racing future of Marchfield is in doubt after the 2008 champion older horse for Canada fractured a hind pastern during a routine work at Woodbine Sept. 29. Surgery was performed and the injury is not considered life-threatening, but it has not yet been established whether Marchfield is likely to return to the racetrack.
 
Bred and owned by Eugene Melnyk, Marchfield is a Canadian-foaled son of A.P. Indy, out of the graded stakes-winning Red Ransom mare Pico Teneriffe. Mark Casse trains the 5-year-old, who has won seven of 23 starts for earnings of $1,040,161. At 3, Marchfield captured the Canadian classic Breeders’ Stakes. Last year he earned his Sovereign Award with a triumph in the Autumn Stakes (Can-II). In 2009, he captured the Dominion Day Handicap (Can-III) on the all-weather surface at Woodbine, the Sky Classic Stakes (Can-II) on turf, and ran second in both the Eclipse Stakes (Can-III) in the Nijinsky Stakes (Can-II). Marchfield’s most recent start was Sept. 20 in the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes (Can-I) in which he finished fifth.
