A $260,000 colt by Giant's Causeway   out of the millionaire Smoke Glacken mare Smok'n Frolic highlighted the Sept. 22 session of the Keeneland September yearling sale, which has continued to be negatively affected by the downturn of the Thoroughbred market. Bought by All the Rage Partners, the dark bay or brown colt was consigned by Adena Springs, agent.

Smok’n Frolic, an earner of more than $1.5 million, won six graded stakes during her 33-start career, including the Cotillion Handicap and Demoiselle Stakes (both gr. II). Adena bought Smok’n Frolic for $1,250,000 at the 2004 Keeneland November mixed sale. Last year, she fetched $750,000 at the same sale from Shadai Farm, after which she was shipped to the Japan-based operation.

Now past the halfway point of the sale, Keeneland sold 274 horses for a gross of $9,744,700, a dip of 30.97% from a year ago when 270 yearlings sold for $14,116,400. The session’s average of $35,565 marked a 31.98% fall from 2008’s $52,283, while the median of $25,000 slipped 37.5% compared to $40,000 last year.

The Florida-based partnership of Randy Hartley and Dean DeRenzo paid the day’s second-highest price of $230,000 for a colt by Sky Mesa  . Consigned by Lane’s End, agent, the colt is out of the Fusaichi Pegasus   mare Boardroom Scandal.

Lane’s End also sold the highest price filly of the day, a daughter of Dixie Union, who was bought for $200,000 by W.D. North Thoroughbreds. Out of the Allen's Prospect mare Icy Demeanor, the filly is a half-sister to multiple stakes winner Your Flame In Me.

A total of 1,747 horses have been sold compared to 1,967 at this point last year. Cumulative gross sales for the eight days totaled $171,778,500, down 41.86% from $295,453,300 in 2008. The average dipped 34.54% from $150,205 to $98,328. The median price of $55,000 plunged 42.11% from last year’s $95,000.
