Speightstown Yearling Colt Brings $700,000

Hip No. 39, a Speightstown colt consigned by Dromoland Farm, sold for $700,000 during the first session of the Keeneland September yearling sale.

Agent John Ferguson, accompanied by client Sheikh Mohammed, went to $700,000 to purchase Hip No. 39, a Speightstown   colt consigned by Dromoland Farm, at the first session of the Keeneland September yearling sale Sept. 14.

The colt is a half-brother to multiple graded stakes winner Elusive Diva and to stakes winners R. Baggio and Handyman Bill. Bred in Kentucky by Doris Konecny, Susan Branch, and Allen Branch, the colt was purchased by Long’s Peak Equine for $280,000 as a weanling at the 2008 Keeneland November sale.

The colt was the second major purchase by Ferguson during the early portion of the marathon 14-day sale. Earlier, he signed the ticket for Hip No. 9, a Storm Cat colt sold for $360,000 as part of the Overbrook Farm dispersal. The colt was produced from the unraced Unbridled mare Referendum, a half sister to multiple grade I winner Jersey Girl.
