Godolphin Stables’ Midshipman , unraced since taking the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (gr. I) last fall en route to the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old male, is close to making a return to the races, said assistant trainer Rick Mettee.
“We’re looking at a race like the Jerome (gr. II) on October 11 for him,” Mettee said. “It’s a tough race, but he’s a pretty good horse. We’ll work him a few more times, and see.”
The $150,000 Jerome is restricted to 3-year-olds going one mile.
Midshipman sustained a soft soft tissue injury to his left foreleg during routine exercise at Godolphin’s Al Quoz Stables in Dubai on Feb. 28.
The son of Unbridled's Song most recently worked five furlongs in 1:00.25 on Sept. 10, third-fastest of 17 at the distance.
Bred by Stonerside Stable, who initially raced him, Midshipman was part of the operation sold last year to Darley Stable. Trained as a 2-year-old by Bob Baffert, the chestnut colt won three of four starts, including the BC Juvenile and the Del Mar Futurity (gr. I) while earning $1,380,200.
