Warrior's Reward Works Toward Travers (Edited NYRA release) Trainer Ian Wilkes was not bothered by the slop Sunday morning and sent A. Steven Miles Jr.’s Warrior's Reward out for a five-furlong work over the sloppy main track at Saratoga Racecourse with jockey Calvin Borel in the irons as he worked toward the $1-million Shadwell Travers Stakes (gr. I). Warrior’s Reward, runner-up in the grade II Jim Dandy on Aug. 1, covered the distance in 1:00.98. "I’ve been watching him and I thought he needed the workout today," Wilkes said. "If I waited another day, who knows what the track [condition] would be tomorrow. He had no problems in handling the track. Even though he’s a big horse, he always handles the track well." Wilkes said he was unsure when Joseph Rauch’s Capt. Candyman Can would have his final work before the grade 1, $300,000 NetJets King’s Bishop Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs on the Travers card. "He’s going good," Wilkes said of the colt. "I don’t know when I will work him. It will be either tomorrow or Tuesday. I watched him train this morning and I want to get a guide or a feel before I give him a work." |
