Trainer Mulhall Recovering from Surgery

(Edited Del Mar Thoroughbred Club release)

Richard Mulhall, a long-time trainer and for several years the stable manager for Prince Ahmed Salmen's The Thoroughbred Corp., is recovering from major spinal surgery at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, Calif., his daughter, trainer Kristin Mulhall, reported Aug. 20.

Mulhall, who suffered injuries in an accident, according to his daughter, at his rented condominium in Del Mar July 23, had five cervical vertebrae replaced in the surgery performed by Dr. William Costigan at Huntington Memorial. Kristin Mulhall said the surgery resulted in placement of two rods, four plates and 18 screws to accomplish the replacement. She said the vertebrae were pressing against his spinal cord.

"My father is progressing well now," Kristin Mulhall said. "He's getting up and walking a bit each day. Our goal is to have him back at the racetrack in time for the Breeders' Cup (Nov. 6-7 at Oak Tree at Santa Anita)."
