Retama Park Set to Begin Fall Meet

(edited press release)

There will be new faces among the trainers’ colony at Retama Park when the 32-day fall Thoroughbred meeting opens on Aug. 28.
The Retama stakes schedule has been slashed to maintain the purse structure for maiden, claiming and allowance contests. Highlighting the meet are a pair of $125,000 Texas Stallion Stakes races at six furlongs for 2-year-olds Sept. 26 and two $100,000 stakes races at a mile on the turf for 2-year-olds Oct. 24.
Trainers are bringing horses from tracks across the country including Arapahoe Park in Colorado, Canterbury Park in Minnesota, and Colonial Downs in Virginia.
In addition, there won’t be a shortage of conditioners that call the South Texas track home during the fall meet, including the King of Retama, Danny Pish, who continued his amazing streak by winning his 10th title last winter during the transplanted 43-day Sam Houston Race Park meeting sent west because of damage to its facility last year by Hurricane Ike.
Jockey Eguard A. Tejera will return with his sights set on a fourth consecutive riding title. The other top three finishers are expected back: Steve J. Bourque, Jose Figueroa and T. L. Collier.
Plans for the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame gala and racing program on Oct. 10 are still being discussed.
