Irish stallion Sadler's Wells became racing all-time leader by number of stakes winners when his 3-year-old son Roman Saddle won the July 21 Prix Berteux (Fr-III) to become stakes winner No. 177. His total now is one more than registered by the former leader, Mr. Prospector.

Twenty-year-old Sadler's Wells, who holds court at Coolmore Stud in Ireland, led the English/Irish sire lists the last nine years and appears headed for another title. His son Galileo earned $619,797 for winning the July 28 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (Eng-I) to increase his yearly total to upwards of $2 million. The colt also scored earlier group I wins in the Epsom and Irish Derbys. Sadler's Wells (Northern Dancer--Fairy Bridge, by Bold Reason) is represented by 20 stakes winners this year.
