NTRA Seeks More Organizational Strength

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association says it needs more organizational strength and power in order to foster industry growth, and it has mapped out a plan of attack through at least 2005.

In general, the NTRA wants to become like other sports associations -- pooled media rights, mandatory member participation in programs, and league control of scheduling. Otherwise, it "will be limited in its ability to deliver benefits to members and the industry," according to a revised business plan that spans 2001-2005.

The business plan lists five priorities:
--Strengthen core marketing programs
--Significantly increase legislative and political capabilities
--Create the "World Championships" framework and brand
--Help the industry maximize account wagering potential
--Strengthen the organization

In terms of strengthening the organization, the options include a full corporate merger with Breeders' Cup Ltd., long-term contracts with members, an executive retention program, and acquisition of rights of some World Thoroughbred Championships races on a revenue-sharing basis.

The NTRA also plans to "concentrate more on supportive members and less on reluctant members or industry opponents," the business plan says.
