California Stallion Beau Genius Pensioned

Beau Genius, who topped the $2-million mark in progeny earnings eight consecutive years, has been pensioned because of declining fertility at Donald and Karen Cohn's Ballena Vista Farm near Ramona, Calif. The 24-year-old son of Bold Ruckus had begun his stallion career at Vinery near Midway, Ky., following a racing career in which he won 13 stakes and earned $1,055,600.

A grade I winner, Beau Genius is represented by 39 stakes winners, 53 stakes-placed runners, and the earners of $33.4 million. Twice he topped the $3.4-million mark in year-end progeny earnings.

Beau Genius’ runners include Irish champion filly Belle Genius, California grade II winner Beau’s Town, New York grade III winner Gentleman Beau, and California grade III winner My Creed. 

Bred in Ontario, Canada, by Dr. David Brian Davidson, Beau Genius enjoyed his best season at 5 in 1990 for Davidson and co-owner Joseph Shiewitz. Trained by Gerald S. Bennett, Beau Genius won nine stakes, including the Philip H. Iselin Handicap (gr. I) at Monmouth Park and the Michigan Mile and One-Eighth Handicap (gr. II) at Detroit Race Course.

Beau Genius, out of the stakes-placed Viceregal mare Royal Colleen, will continue to reside at Ballena Vista.
