Say Florida Sandy Wins Philadelphia BC

Say Florida Sandy will be pointed toward the Breeders' Cup Sprint after winning Saturday's Philadelphia Park Breeders' Cup Handicap.
After being pinned against the rail for the first half of the race, jockey Aaron Gryder angled Say Florida Sandy to the outside to win the $188,000 Philadelphia Park Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) on Saturday afternoon.

Say Florida Sandy crossed the line six lengths ahead of Wake at Noon. Max's Pal checked in third with Iron Punch fourth. Say Florida Sandy was timed in 1:08.51 for six furlongs on a fast track.

The winner's check for $120,000 raised the 7-year-old horse's lifetime earnings to $1,307,818. Juan Serey, who trains Say Florida Sandy for Rahway, N.J. scrap-iron dealer John Rotella, said he will point the horse for the $1-million Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) at Belmont Park in late October.

"The horse has earned the right to run for the biggest purses," Serey said.

When Nunzio and Run Kush Run scratched out of the race, the field was reduced to four starters. Say Florida Sandy paid $4 to win and $2.20 to place. Wake at Noon paid $2.60. The winning exacta combination returned $8.80. (Chart, Equibase)
