Pure Clan bounds home in the Modesty at Arlington.
Lewis Lakin’s homebred Pure Clan, making just her second start of the season, overtook pacesetter Tizaqueena in upper stretch and sailed to the wire for a 2 1/2-length victory in the $200,000 Modesty Handicap (gr. IIIT) (VIDEO) July 11 on the Arlington Park turf.
A 4-year-old millionaire daughter of Pure Prize
, Pure Clan notched her fifth graded stakes win as the odds-on favorite. The chestnut filly entered the 1 3/16-mile event off a neck defeat in the Early Times Mint Julep Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Churchill Downs June 6, her first start since finishing 10th
in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) nearly eight months ago at Santa Anita. Julien Leparoux rode the winner for Bob Holthus.
Lepaoux kept Pure Clan wide and off the pace throughout the Modesty, content to allow Tizaqueena to have things her own way on the front end in the short field of five. Tizaqueena recorded splits of :25.29, :49.89, and 1:13.63 under E.T. Baird, while Dynaforce
pressed the pace.
When they rounded the far turn Tizaqueena still had the lead, but Dynaforce was just to her outside, and Pure Clan, running four-wide, also loomed large. Tizaqueena continued her narrow advantage when they straightened away, but it wasn’t long before Pure Clan sprinted right on by and cruised to the wire for her first win of the year.
Tizaqueena gamely held on for second, a neck in front of Dynaforce. Lemonette held fourth, while Ciao trailed. The final time on the ‘firm’ turf was 1:55.27.
Pure Clan, who will likely point for the $750,000 Beverly D. (gr. IT) Aug at 8 Arlington, improved her record to 7-3-2 from 13 starts. Bred in Kentucky and out of the General Assembly mare Gather The Clan, she has now earned $1,193,998. Her biggest win came last summer at Hollywood Park in the grade I American Oaks.
The winner paid $3.60, $2.20, and $2.10. The $2 exacta (1-2) returned $11.40 and the $2 trifecta (1-2-6) was $15.40. Colina Verde was scratched.
