Prohibitive choice Informed Decision shook off a pace challenge at the top of the stretch and drew off for her fifth consecutive win in $140,000 Chicago Handicap (gr. III) July 4 at Arlington Park (VIDEO).
Informed Decision, who came into the seven-furlong Chicago off back-to-back grade I wins at the distance, won under a hand ride from Julien Leparoux by 4 3/4 lengths.
Sent off at 1-5, Informed Decision was under pressure from Authenicat through early fractions of :23.56 and :46.70 before her rival shortened stride. The winning gray/roan filly led by 1 1/2 lengths at the eighth pole and never felt the whip while drawing clear.
Unforgotten, under Fernando Jara, got up for the place spot after a slow beginning by 1 1/4 lengths over the Canadian filly Authenicat and Robert Landry. The final time on Arlington's Polytack was 1:09.73.
Owned by Augustin Stable and trained Jonathan Sheppard, the 4-year-old daughter of Monarchos earned her eighth win in 10 starts overall. The $89,400 winner’s share boosted her bankroll to $811,617.
“There was no pace today,” Leparoux said, “but you never know if someone else would try to go to the front and steal the race from her. We didn’t really have any plan today. We just broke from the gate – if anybody wanted to go, okay, and if not, we’d take the lead.”
Informed Decision won the Humana Distaff (gr. I) on a sloppy Churchill Downs track May 2. She captured the Madison (gr. I) at Keeneland prior to that. She is undefeated in four starts on synthetic surfaces.
“This race seemed to fit her schedule nicely,” said Hall of Fame trainer Sheppard. “Seven furlongs is a good distance for her and she likes the synthetic tracks. I’ve never run a horse at such a short price before, so I was a bit nervous to be honest. It’s a relief that it’s over. She ran great and Julien gave her a beautiful ride.”
Informed Decision improved to five-for-five at the seven-furlong distance.
Bred in Kentucky by C Kidder and N Cole, Informed Decision is out of the His Majesty mare Palangana and sold for $320,000 at auction in May 2007.
Unforgotten, last early, made a mild rally to overtake Authenicat for the place spot.
“I was running for second place today,” said Authenicat’s jockey Fernando Jara. “I tried to save my filly for a little run at the end, but the other filly was tough today. I was happy with my filly’s effort.”
Crown of Diamonds, Choragus and Tiz to Dream completed the order of finish.
Informed Decision carried top weight of 124 pounds and paid $2.40, $2.20 and $2.10. Unforgotten returned $5.80 and $4. Authenicat paid $3.40.
