French Derby Winner Le Havre Retired

Le Havre, winner of the June 7 Prix du Jockey-Club (Fr-I, the French Derby) for owner Gerard Augustin-Normand, has been retired from racing because of a tendon injury suffered during the classic race, according to the Racing Post.

Trainer Jean-Claude Rouget bought Le Havre for 100,000 euros (approximately $135,000) at the 2007 Arqana Deauville August sale.

Bred in Ireland by Team Hogdala AB, Le Havre is by English champion Noverre, a son of the recently pensioned stallion Rahy, who stood at Robert N. Clay’s Three Chimneys Farm near Midway, Ky. Le Havre is the first foal from the German-bred Marie Rheinberg (by Surako).

Le Havre, who won four of six races, also captured the Prix Djebel and ran second in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Fr-I, Two Thousand Guineas). He earned $1,397,335.

Breeding plans are undecided.
