A golf tournament benefiting injured jockey Rene Douglas will be held at Indian Lakes Golf Course in Bloomingdale, Ill. July 20.

Douglas was seriously injured in a racing accident May 23 at Arlington Park. After eight hours of spinal surgery at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, he still has not regained feeling from the chest down.

Among his other injuries were a fractured sternum and many broken ribs. Fortunately, Douglas does have full use of his arms, has no head injuries, and is able to communicate to hospital staff and family. Doctors are optimistic about his recovery and hope once the swelling subsides that he will regain the use of his legs. He has begun rehab but has a long road ahead of him.

The registration deadline for the charitable event is July 15. Cost is $150 per person, $550 per foursome, and $45 for dinner only. Golf fees include greens fees, golf cart, range balls, snack lunch, and dinner following play.

Registration will be at 11:00 a.m., with tee off at noon, dinner and silent auction at 6 p.m., and live auction at 7 p.m.

Celebrity players that will be present at the event include Ronny Bull, Bob Love, Ron Magers of ABC News, Rich Nye, Billy Piercez, Laffit Pincay, and Billy Pierce. There will be prizes for beat the pro, closest to the hole, hole in one contest, longest drive, and winning team.
