Retired outrider Buckie Fires, who hails from a prominent racing family, died June 20 in Rivervale, Ark., from complications from breaking a hip, according to Daily Racing Form. He had broken the hip three weeks earlier. He was 71.
Fires worked as an outrider at such tracks as Oaklawn Park, Arlington Park, Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Louisiana Downs, and Saratoga.
Two of Fires’ brothers, Earlie and Jackie, are retired jockeys and another brother, William, who goes by Jinks, is a trainer.
Fires’ other survivors include wife Pat and son Richard, who is a blacksmith at Louisiana Downs.
