Fantastic Look, a grade I winner/producer, died May 29 after foaling a Salt Lake colt the same day at Betty Mabee’s Golden Eagle Farm near Ramona, Calif. The colt has been placed on a nurse mare and is doing fine.
Bred by Mabee and her late husband, John Mabee, Fantastic Look won or placed in 17 of 23 races and earned $681,247 in the Golden Eagle silks. Her big wins came in the 1989 Fantasy Stakes (gr. I) over grade I winner Imaginary Lady at Oaklawn Park and in the 1990 Silver Belles Handicap (gr. II) at Hollywood Park.
Trained by Gary F. Jones, Fantastic Look took on champion Bayakoa in three graded stakes in 1990 and placed to her in all three. She was beaten a nose in the Chula Vista Handicap (gr. II) at Del Mar and finished second in the Milady Handicap (gr. I) at Hollywood. For her career, Fantastic Look won or placed in 13 stakes, 11 of which were graded.
Fantastic Look started her broodmare career by producing 13 consecutive foals (from 1993-2005), including stakes winners Absolute Harmony (by Seeking the Gold), Classy Prospector (by Mr. Prospector), and Designed for Luck (by Rahy). The last-named won three graded stakes for David and Holly Wilson. Designed for Luck’s big win came in the 2004 Shoemaker Breeders’ Cup Mile Stakes (gr. IT) at Hollywood.
“Fantastic Look was a special mare for us and has always been a farm favorite because of her determination and attitude, and we are fortunate to have a 2-year-old filly by Salt Lake named Saltendipity to carry on this important family,” said general manager Janine McCullough. Saltendipity currently is in training.
Fantastic Look, out of the stakes-winning Riva Ridge mare Fantastic Girl, produced a total of 14 named foals, of which seven have won. She is buried at Golden Eagle.
