More than 200 horses have been nominated for the 2009 Claiming Crown series to be run on July 25, Canterbury Park announced.

This will be the ninth time in 11 Claiming Crown renewals that the event will be held at Canterbury Park in the Minneapolis suburb of Shakopee. Claiming Crown, Thoroughbred racing’s $600,000 day for “blue collar runners”, was conceived through a partnership between the National Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association and the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association to showcase claiming horses of all levels.

The nominations include 198 named horses and 40 ‘open’ nominations, for which horses must be named by June 5.That also is the deadline for additional $500 nominations.

“We are very excited about hosting Claiming Crown again,” said Randy Sampson, Canterbury Park president . “Our fans look forward to this special day of racing which attracts horses, trainers, jockeys, and owners from all parts of the country.”

This year's seven-race Claiming Crown offers $600,000 in purse money for the connections of Thoroughbreds that have started at least once since Jan. 1, 2008, for claiming prices ranging from $7,500 to $35,000. For the second straight year, the Claiming Crown card also will feature the $100,000 Lady Canterbury Breeders’ Cup Stakes.
