Jayeff B Stables' Navesink rebounded from his lone career defeat to win Sunday's $249,000 Kent Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Delaware Park. Under Ramon Dominguez, Navesink completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.98 on firm turf.

Navesink allowed Please Me Doc to set slow fractions, made up ground approaching the stretch, and drew off to the two-length victory over Bowman Mill. Harrisand finished third, followed by Please Me Doc, One Eyed Joker, Jocund, Reduit, Citiroyal, Art Contemporain, and Stauch.

Virginia-bred Navesink (Irish River--Sailing Minstrel, by The Minstrel) began his racing career in Novemeber, defeating Bay Eagle in a Laurel Park maiden race. He next raced in May, when he won a Belmont Park allowance race and followed that with a Monmouth Park allowance victory. He returned to Belmont Park in June, finishing third in the Hill Prince Stakes (gr. IIIT). The 3-year-old colt earned $151,000 for the win, his fourth in five starts. Navesink is trained by Alan Goldberg and was bred by Lazy Lane Stables.

Navesink, the 19-10 favorite, paid $5.80, $3.60, and $3. Bowman Mill returned $4.80 and $3.60 and completed the $21.80 exacta. Harrisand paid $4 to show.

Earlier on the card, John's Call began his 10-year-old campaign the same way he started his 2000 season, with a victory in the $69,100 Cape Henlopen Overnight Handicap.

"He does not run like a 10-year-old, maybe more like a 4- or 5-year-old," said winning rider Jean Luc Samyn. "I only wish I could be as smart as him."

"We didn't train him that hard. For an older horse, you do not need to really drill on them too much," said winning trainer Tom Voss. "Jean-Luc said that maybe he got a little tired the last eighth. He did not run him that hard anyway. There was something left there probably." (Charts, Equibase)
