Legislation that would bring off-track and account wagering to New Jersey will be signed into law at Monmouth Park Aug. 5, the day of the $1 million Haskell Invitational Handicap.
"It has been confirmed that the bill will be signed at Monmouth; the question is who will sign it," said Barbara DeMarco-Reiche, lobbyist for the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association. She said there is a possibility that Gov. Donald DiFrancesco will be out of state on Aug. 5, and an acting Governor will be tabbed to deputize.
Robert Kulina, Monmouth Park's vice president of racing, said the bill signing would take place at the track, but he did not know any details, such as where in the plant the ceremony would be held.
"The OTB bill signing just adds to a really big day for us," Kulina said.
