Smarty Jones overcame huge odds to win the 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Quickly recovering from a fractured skull he sustained during a gate schooling session as a 2-year-old, Smarty became one of two Pennsylvania-breds to capture the Derby, after which he won the Preakness by a record margin of 11 ½ lengths. He is also known as the first unbeaten Derby winner since Seattle Slew 1977. After being retired at the end of 2004 due to chronic bruising, he was acquired for stud duty by Three Chimneys. His first crops of foals are now running at tracks across the country.
