A memorial service for 1987 Kentucky Derby (gr. I) winner and Horse of the Year Alysheba will be held April 29 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, it was recently announced. The event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. EST.
Alysheba, who was euthanized March 27 at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute near Lexington, was 25 years old at the time of his death. In 1987, he won the Derby, Preakness Stakes (gr. I), and Super Derby (gr. I), before losing by a nose to Ferdinand in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I). He won six grade-I stakes the following year, including the Breeders’ Cup Classic, and was named Horse of the Year for 1988.
After retiring to stud with race earnings of $6,679,242, Alysheba sired 18 stakes winners and the earners of $16.1 million.
