I Want Revenge was one of five horses posting workouts April 21 at Churchill Downs in preparation for the May 2 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I), completing five furlongs on a slightly-off track in 1:01 3/5. The time was eighth-fastest among 19 horses working the distance.
The son of Stephen Got Even , who was ridden by regular jockey Joe Talamo, began his work two lengths behind stablemate Gato Go Win, and finished a neck ahead, galloping out six furlongs in 1:15 2/5. I Want Revenge’s earlier splits were :12 2/5, :25, and :37.
Jeff Mullins, who trains the Wood Memorial (gr. I) winner, called the workout a good one.
“The track was a little mushy this morning,” he said. “I think our horse got plenty out of it. He galloped out good and strong. Joe said he handled the track pretty well. I think we are in pretty good shape.”
Talamo, who has ridden I Want Revenge in his last six starts, said the colt handled the Churchill oval well, despite an off-track compromised by heavy rain on Sunday and Monday.
“He had a good little target out there,” Talamo said of Gato Go Win. “He sat right behind … he did pretty much what he does all of the time. He always gallops out really good.”
Four other Derby contenders also posted works:
--Pioneerof the Nile went five furlongs in 1:00 4/5, galloping out in 1:13 2/5
--Chocolate Candy went a mile in 1:42, galloping out in 1:57
--Flying Private went five furlongs in 1:01 1/5, galloping out in 1:16;
--Flat Out went five furlongs in 1:03 1/5.
