Six races originally written as overnight stakes for 2 year olds for the 2009 Calder Meet are now full-fledged stakes races on the schedule for the upcoming season, which begins Friday, April 24. The additional funding comes from the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association for winning Florida-breds.
The six $50,000 overnight stakes double in value to $100,000 each with the additional FTBOA funding for winning Florida-breds. The races are:
--Frank Gomez Stakes, July 11, 2009, 6 furlongs, 2 year olds
--J J’s Dream Stakes, July 11, 2009, 6 furlongs, 2-year-old fillies
--Seacliff Stakes, Aug. 29, 2009, 1 mile, 2 year olds
--Lindsay Frolic Stakes, Aug. 29, 2009, 1 mile, 2-year-old fillies
--Turf Dash Stakes, Aug. 29, 2009, 5 furlongs turf, 2 year olds
--Catcharisingstar Stakes, Aug. 29, 2009, 5 furlongs turf, 2-year-old fillies
The July 11 races are part of Calder’s Summit of Speed program, which also features five other sprint stakes races, including four Graded stakes.
Aug. 29 is the Juvenile Showcase, featuring an entire card dedicated to 2 year olds, including the middle leg of the Florida Stallion Stakes series: the $150,000 Affirmed Division and the $150,000 Susan’s Girl Division for fillies.
