Gallant Son underwent surgery for bone chips on both knees April 10 and will be out of action until at least this fall, trainer Frank Lucarelli said.

The Malabar Gold colt apparently sustained the injuries while finishing seventh in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) on April 4. He underwent surgery at that track's equine clinic.

Lucarelli said Gallant Son, who has won five 10 starts and $161,988 in his career, came out of the surgery well, and that the colt could return to action next fall or winter.

“Fortunately, the prognosis is good,” he said. “That's the way it goes sometimes in this game. If you can't deal with (the setbacks), you get out.”
