Jockey Mike Luzzi broke his left ankle when thrown by his mount in the gate before the third race at Belmont Park Sunday. He was taken to North Shore University Hospital and will be sidelined 4-to-6 weeks.

Luzzi was riding Gold N Fancy, a 2-year-old filly making her first start and trained by Luis Barrera. The horse was scratched and post time for the race was delayed seven minutes.

"Mike said he heard [his ankle] crack," said his agent, Roger Sutton.

Luzzi earned an Eclipse Award in 1989 as the leading apprentice jockey.

Hobeau Farm's homebred Dovey Lovey won the race in wire-to-wire style, completing the five furlongs in :58.61 under jockey Raul Rojas. The Allen Jerkens trainee was making her racing debut in the $70,000 claiming race.
