(from Churchill Downs)
Edward P. Evans’ Quality Road , winner of the Florida Derby (gr. I) for his third victory in four career races, remained the favorite to win the 135th running of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) on May 2 as the third and final pool of Churchill Downs’ 2009 Kentucky Derby Future Wager reached its midway point on the evening of April 3.
Trainer Jimmy Jerkens’ homebred son of Elusive Quality remained the 5-1 choice among 24 wagering interests in KDFW Pool 3. Vinery LLC and Fox Hill Farm’s Friesan Fire , whose three-race winning streak includes a victory in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) at Fair Grounds, was the 9-1 second choice at the end of the day’s betting. The mutuel field, which respresents all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the pool’s 23 individual horses, also stood at 9-1, but slightly more money had been wagered on Friesan Fire. “All others” was favored in both of this year’s previous KDFW pools.
Along with the future wager’s traditional $2 win bet, this year’s third pool is just the second in the bet’s history to offer exacta wagering, also a minimum $2 wager. There are no scratches or refunds in the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.
Total betting in KDFW Pool 3 reached $69,894 by the end of the second day of the pool. Of that total, $20,789 had been wagered in the exacta pool. Pool 3 wagering is scheduled to resume at noon on ET on April 4. The pool will close at 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 5.
Pool 3 odds could look much different following the running of three major Kentucky Derby preps on April 4: the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I), Wood Memorial (gr. I) at Aqueduct and Hawthorne Park’s Illinois Derby (gr. II). Horses that continue to attract solid support through the first two days of the current pool include The Pamplemousse (10-1), I Want Revenge (10-1), Old Fashioned (13-1), Pioneerof the Nile (17-1), Dunkirk (15-1), Win Willy (15-1), Desert Party (16-1) and Chocolate Candy (18-1).
