Mawing Undergoes Surgery on Broken Leg

Jockey Leslie Mawing, who sustained compound fractures of both the tibia and fibula in his left leg in a spill at Golden Gate Fields, had emergency surgery on the leg the evening of April 1 at Highland Hospital in Oakland, Calif.

"The surgery was to repair the tibia fracture and stabilize the fibula fracture, and it was successful," said Dr. David Seftel, track physician at Golden Gate Fields. "A metal rod was put in the tibia."

Dr. Seftel said Mawing would be at Highland for one to two weeks. 

"He's receiving heavy antibiotics intravenously to prevent infection," Dr. Seftel said. "He's also receiving medication for pain control."

Mawing suffered the injuries April 1 in the seventh race, a 1 1/16-miles turf event, when his mount, Pasta Time, crashed through the inner rail during the stretch run. Pasta Time sustained multiple lacerations in the accident, but trainer Ed Moger, Jr. said April 2 that he expects the 4-year-old colt to "be fine with some time."

Mawing, a 35-year-old native of South Africa, is fourth in the Golden Gate Fields jockey standings with 42 victories.
