Jockey Leslie Mawing sustained compound fractures of both the tibia and fibula in his left leg when his mount, Pasta Time, crashed through the inner rail during the stretch run of the seventh race at Golden Gate Fields April 1.

Mawing was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland and was expected to have emergency surgery on the leg, according to Dr. David Seftel, track physician at Golden Gate Fields.

The seventh race, run on the turf, saw Pasta Time move to the lead entering the stretch run of the 1 1/16-mile maiden claiming contest.  Nearing midstretch, the 4-year-old colt ducked into the inside rail and tumbled. Pasta Time quickly bounced back up but did sustain lacerations to his left front leg.

Mawing, a 35-year-old native of South Africa, was enjoying a fine season at Golden Gate Fields, where he ranks fourth in the jockey standings with 42 victories.
