Calder: No Overlap with Gulfstream Dates

Calder Race Course March 31 submitted its final filing for 2009-10 racing dates to the Florida Division of Pari-Mutuel Wagering, and it confirms earlier reports that Calder will not run head-to-head with nearby Gulfstream Park during that period.

Calder’s filing, on the deadline day for Thoroughbred tracks, is for the 12 months from June 1, 2009, to May 31, 2010. Since 2002, Florida Thoroughbred tracks have chosen their racing dates and do not need approval from the Florida DPMW.

In its filing, Calder said it would hold races during the period from June 4, 2009, through Jan. 2, 2010. Calder also said it will race from April 24, 2010, through May 31, 2010.

In a March 27 final filing to the Florida DPMW, Gulfstream said it will hold its next meet from Jan. 3, 2010, through April 24, 2010.

Here are the schedules, for the 12 months beginning June 1, 2009: June 4, 2009-Oct. 19, 2009, Calder meet at Calder; Oct. 22, 2009-Jan. 2, 2010, Tropical at Calder meet at Calder; Jan. 3, 2010-April 24, 2010, Gulfstream; and April 24, 2010-May 31, 2010, Calder meet at Calder. One of the South Florida tracks probably will not run April 24, 2010, which will be a Saturday.

A Calder official April 1 said the track expects to announce its full 2009 schedule April 2 or April 3. That will include announcing its opening day, which is widely expected to be April 24. Gulfstream will end its 2009 meet April 23.

In a preliminary filing last January, Gulfstream told the Florida DPMW it planned to run from Nov. 26, 2009, through April 18, 2010. Calder’s preliminary filing also included late November and all of December—a period that has been part of its schedule for more than a decade.

On March 27, Gulfstream president and general manager Bill Murphy said Gulfstream decided not to race during the last five weeks of 2009 primarily to prevent a conflict for South Florida horsemen and for some employees who work at both Calder and Gulfstream.

Murphy said another factor in that decision was Gulfstream parent Magna Entertainment Corp.’s March 5 filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
