Beverly R. Steinman's homebred Colstar rallied from mid-pack to win Saturday's $150,000 All Along Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. IIIT) on firm turf at Colonial Downs. The $90,000 winner's share of the purse takes Colstar past the $1-million mark for career earnings.
Colstar has won 11 of 18 career races, with six of the wins coming in graded stakes. The Paul Fout-trained daughter of Opening Verse--Ascend, by Risen Star, was bred in Kentucky. The victory marks the second in succession for the 5-year-old mare, coming on the heels of a half-length victory in the Locust Grove Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Churchill Downs last month. Last year, she won three graded stakes, highlighted by a head-length victory over Snow Polina in the Flower Bowl Invitational Handicap (gr. IT) at Belmont Park.
Colstar stopped the timer in 1:47.53 after completing the 1 1/8 miles three lengths ahead of second-place Lucky Lune. Pacesetter Crystal Sea crossed the wire a nose behind Lucky Lune. Spanishinquisition, Queue, Goodas I. Look, Silver Bandana, and Batique completed the order of finish.
The 9-10 favorite, Colstar returned $3.80, $2.80, and $2.40. Lucky Lune paid $3.40 and $3.40. Crystal Sea was worth $4.40 to show. The winning exacta combination returned $15.40. (Chart, Equibase
