Texas Trainer Tommie Morgan Dead

Long-time trainer Tommie Morgan, who trained in Texas and Louisiana for more than three decades, died March 16 in Fort Worth, Texas, after a lengthy illness. He was 62.

Morgan trained Kentucky Derby runners Music Leader (1982) and Encolure (1985). Both ran unplaced. Morgan regularly ran horses at Lone Star Park, Sam Houston Race Park, and Retama Park in Texas. Other notable horses trained by the Cameron, Texas, native were Triple Sec and Mastery’s Gamble.

Morgan’s survivors include his wife, Jackie, and a son, Tommie Morgan II.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Phillips and Luckey Funeral Home, 1041 West U.S. Highway 79, Rockdale, Texas. The funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday.
