Proud Spell, the 2008 Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner, finished second to Superior Storm as the odds-on favorite when the filly made her 2009 debut March 12 in an allowance/optional claiming race Oaklawn Park.

Ridden by Gabriel Saez for trainer Larry Jones, Proud Spell raced third while within striking distance of pacesetter Superior Storm and advanced while four wide on the turn but was unable to catch the winner. In winning by 2 ½ lengths under jockey Luis Quinonez, Superior Storm completed the 1 1/16 miles over a muddy track in 1:46.71.

Trained by Richard Jackson for Jac Mac Stable, the winning daughter of Stormy Atlantic   paid $12.20, $2.40, and $2.20.

A bay filly by Proud Citizen  , Proud Spell was making her first start since last September, when she finished second in the Fitz Dixon Cotillion Stakes (gr. II) at Philadelphia Park. In 2008, she also won the Alabama Stakes (gr. I) and the Delaware (gr. II) and Fair Grounds (gr. II) Oaks. She earned $1,514,840 during the season and was honored with an Eclipse Award as the outstanding 3-year-old filly.
