A horse was euthanized and jockey Eddie Castro suffered a bruised left shoulder during an horrific five-horse spill in the second race March 4 at Aqueduct.

Private Details, a 3-year-old filly ridden by Castro, broke her left front cannon bone while approaching the quarter pole in the maiden claiming race at a mile and 70 yards, according to the New York Racing Association press office. Castro was thrown when the filly broke down and the incident resulted in a chain reaction involving all but the front-runners – eventual winner Southern Oaks and runner-up Quantifier – who were the only two horses in the field to finish the race.

The other horses who fell and lost riders were One Dream Union (Rosie Napravnik), Hot Chile Soup (Joseph Berrios Cruz), All Bets Off (Victor Santiago), and Truly Divine (Ramon Dominguez).

Castro was taken to Jamaica Hospital, where he was treated for a badly bruised shoulder and released. Napravnik was checked by a doctor on her own and took off the rest of her mounts on the card.

Private Details, trained by John Terranova, was euthanized.
