The Kentucky Thoroughbred Association and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders announced their officers for the 2001-02 year. President Alex Rankin; vice president KTA John T. Ward; vice president KTOB Bill Landes; secretary Robert N. Clay; treasurer Charlie Nuckols; assistant treasurer Bill Thomason. Elected to serve three-year terms as directors: Jim Bell, Robert Courtney, Dr. William Fishback, John T.L. Jones, Bill Landes, Don Robinson, Tom Thornbury, Jeff Thornbury, and Anthony Reinstedler. ...Fasig-Tipton will extend the New Sires Showcase format to its Nov. 4th selected mixed sale in Lexington. The evening session will include a section exclusively for foals by stallions with first foals of 2000 and 2001. The nominations deadline for selected weanlings is Aug. 3, while other enteries will close on Aug. 27. ...Clarence Scharbauer Jr.,whose family campaigned Horse of the Year and dual classic winner Alysheba, and Groovy are among six members of the Texas Racing Hall of Fame class of 2001. The new members will be inducted during an Oct. 6 gala at Retama Park. The other new members are Thoroughbred owner and breeder Joe Straus Sr., who was one of the leaders int eh fight to have pari-mutuel wagering legalized in Texas in the 1980s; early 20th century racetrack owner W.T. Waggoner; Thoroughbred owner and breeder Emerson F. Woodward; and Quarter Horse star Special Effort. ... William Werner and John Atto have been elected to The Jockey Club of Canada. Werner lives in Rapid City, Ill., and owns the Golden Seed Company. He has owned Thoroughbreds for more than 13 years. Atto lives in Toronto and is president of Atto Insurance which sponsors the $1 million Atto Mile, a grade 1 race at Woodbine Racetrack...Dan Smith will vacate his post as director of marketing for Del Mar after this season. However, the racetrack will not lose his services entirely--Smith, who has worked at Del Mar since 1964, will continue to hold the position of director of media. Those responsibilities will keep him on track from May to September. Craig Dado, the current vice president in charge of marketing at Santa Anita, will assume Smith's marketing role...The National Museum of Racing will host The Legend of Seabiscuit display beginning July 22. Artifacts, photographs, radio broadcasts, and news coverage of the horse, his connections, and his campaign, are included in the exhibit.
