(Edited press release)
The Race for Education board of directors voted to award more than $500,000 in scholarship money this year to young people in the equine industry, bringing the organization’s total scholarship awards to more than $2,500,000 since its inception in 2002.
This year’s sum includes $117,000 in federal funding obtained by the organization to help build students’ financial literacy skills.
The RFE, a national non-profit organization, continues to offer three primary scholarship programs.
The Horsemen's Scholarship is available to children of equine industry workers, including but not limited to foremen, grooms, hot walkers, trainers, riders, and maintenance workers. This scholarship is open to any field of study.
The Thoroughbred Scholarship is available to students wishing to pursue an equine- or agriculture- related career, such as veterinary medicine, agricultural science, racetrack management, or equine business management. The scholarship is open to students from any background.
The Winner’s Circle Program, sponsored by Platinum Performance and the American Association of Equine Practitioners, is for third-year equine veterinary students.
The RFE also administers the Fleet Indian Scholarship, Ashado Scholarship, NTWA/YouBet.com Journalism Scholarship, as well as scholarship programs for KEEP, Kentucky Horse Council, Racing Officials Accreditation Program, and Gulfstream Park.
“I am extremely proud of all of the young people whose lives have been changed by receiving a Race for Education scholarship,” said the organization’s executive director Elisabeth Jensen. “The Thoroughbred racing industry deserves an enormous amount of credit for their support in making this important program a reality.”
To date, more than $2,000,000 has been awarded to young people with significant financial need. The organization has 200 students in college and 89 graduates. Recipients are chosen by a selection committee made up of members of the racing industry and independent of the RFE board of directors.
