Jockey Lonnie Meche suffered a hairline fracture to a bone in his left foot during an incident in the starting gate prior to the ninth race at Arlington International on Thursday. The 25-year-old rider, seventh in Arlington's jockey standings after Thursday's races, is expected to be sidelined for two weeks.
Talkin Lady, Meche's mount, turned sideways while loading into the starting gate, causing Meche to slam his foot against the gate door. Meche rode 16-1 Talkin Lady to a fourth-place finish in the 6 1/2-furlong maiden claiming race before X-rays taken at Arlington Heights' Northwest Community Hospital revealed the injury.
"The doctor says he'll need about two weeks to recover," said Robert Kelly, Meche's agent. "He goes back to the doctor Tuesday morning and we'll get a better idea then."
Kelly is also the agent for apprentice Zoe Cadman. Cadman was involved in a starting gate incident on July 7 which resulted in a hairline fracture of her pelvis. "She was at the doctor today," Kelly said. "She needs about four more weeks before she'll be back riding."
