Patena is being pointed to the Louisiana Derby.
LeComte Stakes (gr. III) runner-up Patena, will make his first start for new majority owner IEAH Stables in the March 14 Louisiana Derby (gr. II), IEAH co-president Mike Iavarone said.
“I think the Louisiana Derby would be the perfect place to bring him back,” Iavarone said. “That gives Rick (trainer Dutrow) a little more to have him 100% right and make him the happiest horse we can so he runs the race of his life. Rick has already done work on his gluteal (muscle) and he’s moving really well behind. He’s a happy horse already and he’s going to get happier and happier.
“Rick said to me he can see this horse running a freaky race in the Louisiana Derby. If he does freak, we’ll train him right up to the Derby. If we have to, we can run him again at Keeneland in the Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I), which will give him four weeks and then three weeks to the Kentucky Derby. He’s already run on Polytrack, and we can use that as a back-up. The other option is to go right to the Florida Derby (gr. I), but the only risk of that is if he gets a bad trip and runs third, you don’t have enough earnings to get in the Derby.
“The horse has a great mind and a lot of scope and we’re all fired up over him. If he comes into the Derby the way we think he can we won’t even consider running Stardom Bound. She’ll go in the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I).”
At Oaklawn Park Thursday, Old Fashioned , who arrived at Hot Springs recently, turned in a bullet half-mile breeze in :48 2/5, the fastest of six works at the distance. The son of Unbridled's Song is scheduled to make his 3-year-old debut in the Feb. 16 Southwest Stakes (gr. III).
