Stronach Stable's homebred Euchre rallied from just off the pace to win the $401,625 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. III) by 1 3/4 lengths on Saturday at Prairie Meadows. Under Garrett Gomez, Euchre completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:47.72 on a fast track to earn the $240,000 winner's share of the purse.
Favored Dixie Dot Com set the early paced while pressed first by Euchre and then locally-based Sure Shot Biscuit. Gomez settled Euchre in third after an opening half-mile run in :46.36, with Sir Bear biding his time in fourth. Dixie Dot Com inched away from Sure Shot Biscuit in the ensuing quarter-mile as Euchre began to move into contention. Dixie Dot Com led Euchre into the stretch before Euchre bounded to the lead in mid-stretch and pulled away to the wire. Dixie Dot Com finished 10 3/4 lengths ahead of third-place Sure Shot Biscuit, with Sir Bear another 4 3/4 lengths back in fourth. Tiltam, Battle Mountain, and Bravo Bull completed the order of finish.
The win marks the second straight win in a graded stakes for Euchre, who came into the Cornhusker following a 1 1/2-length win in the All American Handicap (gr. II) at Bay Meadows. The Bobby Frankel trainee has now won six of 16 career races, including the Bel Air Handicap (gr. II). Bred in Canada, Euchre is a 5-year0ld gelded son of Personal Flag out of Solid Eight, by Fit to Fight.
