Begin, dam of 2001 champion Xtra Heat, was euthanized Jan. 14 at Pope McLean’s Crestwood Farm near Lexington. She was 29.
Xtra Heat, who was bred by McLean in partnership, was a rarity among champion 3-year-old fillies in that she was a sprinter. During her career, Xtra Heat won 25 stakes, including the Prioress Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park, and earned $2,389,635.
Xtra Heat (by Dixieland Heat) is the dam of stakes winner Southwestern Heat and two stakes-placed runners, including Elusive Heat, who ran second in the Jan. 4 Old Hat Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park.
Begin was bred in Kentucky by Hillbrook Farm. She won or placed in 15 of 25 races, was stakes-placed at Latonia, and earned $61,794.
Begin (Hatchet Man--Crimson Charla, by Crimson Satan) produced 13 foals, 10 of which were winners, including stakes-placed Bless Our Home and Fit and Ready.
