Champion Xtra Heat, daughter of Begin.

Begin, dam of 2001 champion Xtra Heat, was euthanized Jan. 14 at Pope McLean’s Crestwood Farm near Lexington. She was 29.

Xtra Heat, who was bred by McLean in partnership, was a rarity among champion 3-year-old fillies in that she was a sprinter. During her career, Xtra Heat won 25 stakes, including the Prioress Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park, and earned $2,389,635.

Xtra Heat (by Dixieland Heat) is the dam of stakes winner Southwestern Heat and two stakes-placed runners, including Elusive Heat, who ran second in the Jan. 4 Old Hat Stakes (gr. III) at Gulfstream Park.

Begin was bred in Kentucky by Hillbrook Farm. She won or placed in 15 of 25 races, was stakes-placed at Latonia, and earned $61,794.

Begin (Hatchet Man--Crimson Charla, by Crimson Satan) produced 13 foals, 10 of which were winners, including stakes-placed Bless Our Home and Fit and Ready.
