Jorge Chavez, one of the top jockeys in the country and winner of this year's Kentucky Derby aboard Monarchos, will travel to Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, Saturday to pilot Sir Bear in the $400,000 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Breeders' Cup Handicap.
Chavez will make his second visit to Prairie Meadows. On May 21, he participated in the Prairie Meadows Riding Cup.
Sir Bear, trained by Ralph Ziadie, won the grade III event at 1 1/8 miles last year. "He's like a fine wine -- better with age," Ziadie said of the winner of this year's Gulfstream Park Handicap.
Others in the Cornhusker are Euchre, trained by Bobby Frankel; Dixie Dot Com, trained by W.J. Morey Jr.; Iowa-bred Sure Shot Biscuit, trained by Kelly Von Hemel; Battle Mountain, trained by Don Von Hemel; Bravo Bull, trained by Paul Pearson; and Tiltam, trained by Arnold Lyons.
